*Developmental Cognitive Delay, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disability, Speech and Language Impairment, Physical Impairment.
Other disabilities will be reviewed to determine if this is an appropriate program to meet the needs of the individual.
Classes We Offer
Friendship 101
Freindship 101 will cover the basic social skills required to make and maintain quality friendships. Sometimes we meet people we like and want to be friends. The problem is that we don't always know how to do it. In this class, our members will learn how to find common interests, engage in reciprocal communication, learn how to engage with friends via text message or phone, and how to navigate situations where you don't necessarily agree.
Friendship 102
Building on the foundation laid with Friendship 101, Friendship 102 will expand on managing relationsips including those in their own families. This class also provides a significant focus on the development of healthy relationships, boundary setting, and much more!
Required Forms
We have three separate required forms.
These must be completed by either the member or their guardian.
Copies of these will be available at the start of each 8 week class.
Future Offerings
As we build our membership, we will be developing
additional courses designed to meet the many needs
of those adults whose disability prevents them from being fully immersed in community-based social activities.
Under Development
Dating Landmines: This course will address the many challenges that confront everyone who is looking to find romance. We will cover finding a romantic partner as well as how to keep a relationship a healthy and happy one.
Exploring Sexuality Safely: This course will discuss the safe and healthy ways that our members can explore their sexuality safely. Topics will include, but not be limited to safer sex practices, consent, managing regret, and healthy outlets for the natural desires we all share.
Social Media Safety: The rapid expansion of social media use has left many vulnerable to situations that range from just feeling embarrassed to being in real danger. This class will address appropriate social media use, how to recognize a scam, and how to keep personal information safe. We will cover technology that includes phones, tablets, and computers.
We are long-time special education teachers
We realized that there is a gap in services that are available to those who have aged out of the public school system. There are many services and a variety of programming for individuals who are not able to be independent in the community with limited supports and supervision. Those who can be more independent are left without a place to find companionship and information.
Positive Social has been developed to meet the unique needs of people who find their disability negatively impacts their social skills.

More About Us
Between the two of us, we have over 60 years working with and teaching young people who have disabilities.
Lori has taught at a variety of levels from elementary to high school. She is married and has a daughter who is a recent college graduate. She enjoys being active at school, coaches an adaptive bowling team, and assists with a variety of athletic team events. Lori is a fabulous cook and enjoys making food for her friends and family.
Judy began her career in Michigan where she worked in a variety of settings from early childhood to high school. She is also married and has three children. Judy and her husband moved to Minnesota in July of 2019 to be closer to her family and a major airport since she has children on both coasts and one who continues to reside in West Michigan. Like Lori, she loves to cook and bake.
